Celebrating International Women's Day Women's Rights in Kentucky Oral History Project

In honor of International Women's Day and Women's History Month, we are highlighting a collection with Kentucky women sharing their contributions to the Women's Rights Movement. One of the narrators, Nelle Pitcock Horlander, is featured in the book Kentucky Women: Two Centuries of Indomitable Spirit and Vision. Horlander worked in the telecommunications industry and was the first woman to hold the position of Communications Consultant at Bell South in the early 1960s. Horlander was also the director of the Communications Workers of America labor union's Kentucky office from 1974 to 1996.

Kentucky has been on the cutting edge of oral history for decades. KOHC began in 1976 as a way to tell the stories of Kentuckians from all of its one hundred and twenty counties. In 1992, the Kentucky General Assembly placed the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) in charge of administering KOHC. Today, KHS and KOHC strive to continue uplifting the voices of Kentuckians from all backgrounds through oral history.
