Helen Fisher Frye recounts growing up in Danville, Kentucky and attending a segregated elementary and high school. She discusses her decision to attend Kentucky State University (KSU) and major in education. She went on to graduate school at Centre College and became the first African American student accepted at the college. Frye describes the various civil rights and human rights activities and councils she has been a part of, including being president of her local NAACP chapter and reestablishing an African American troop of girl scouts.
