Alston recalls signs of segregation in Paducah and his first job at a grocery in 1933. He describes getting trained in electronics and going into the military. When he returned to Paducah he held a variety of jobs including District Manager of Mammoth Insurance, while also continuing to study. He provides details about his efforts to be employed by the U.S. Post Office, being passed over despite high scores on test, but eventually becoming the first regular Black carrier and later a Civil Service Examiner. His experience in Real Estate indicates a fairly open housing market with a couple of incident which he notes. Transcript available.
