Whitney's father read law and passed the Bar in Glasgow before becoming a letter carrier and practicing law beginning in Hopkinsville 1907. Whitney tells of his own long involvement in the community, its demographics, his perception of schools, public accommodations, housing patterns, the employment situation, the importance of the city's change to council form of government, the NAACP, the insurance industry, and real estate . He tells also of being trained in the Signal Corp at the beginning of World War II (WW II) and being sent on assignments where his team's expertise was not utilized because they were African American.
