Don Offutt describes growing up in Bowling Green, Kentucky and facing the difficulties that segregation brought to him and his family. He recalls how he spent a year attending Kentucky State University (KSU) before transferring to Western Kentucky University after being recruited for integration of the university. Offutt discusses all the activities and groups he was part of at Western, including helping found the Black Student Union. After graduating, he joined the National Guard for several years until he eventually began to teach history and social science at Bowling Green High School. Offutt concludes his interview by stating that the Black community needs to understand and discuss their history
